About Dezy Dezyanian:

I have been fortunate in my career at the Defense Language Institute (DLI) to work in positions throughout the Persian-Farsi School. My experience, as well as my education and training, has provided me with a unique and highly informed skill set.

My Bachelor’s degree in Persian Farsi literature and my experience in taking DLPT tests as a U.S. Army soldier have provided me with an understanding of the needs of my students. I also developed solid managerial skills while earning my Master’s degree in Public Administration. My strong sense of duty and integrity has put me in a position to offer optimal working and learning environments, respectively, for faculty and students.

In addition, as a native of Iran, a United States citizen, and a U.S. Army veteran, I possess a true international perspective. My fluency in Persian (both Iranian and Afghan dialects), English, and spoken Tadjik/Tajik, as well as my knowledge of Arabic, enhance the multilingual aspect of DLI. Prior to my arrival in the U.S., my work as Embassy Liaison for the Swiss Embassy U.S. Interest Section in Tehran allowed me to cultivate a comprehensive knowledge of intelligence laws, regulations and policies, and it gave me a front-row seat to international developments affecting the United States, Iran and Afghanistan.

As Faculty Advisory Council (FAC) President of the Persian-Farsi School, I effectively coordinated operations and helped the faculty and administration as well as the management of the school.

My goal is always to be focused on the mission. This was demonstrated during my service in the U.S. Army. My Brigade was scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan from Germany, and my soldiers had minimal to no knowledge of the language and culture they would soon encounter. The Brigade Commandant, noting my personal experience with both language and culture, entrusted me with the soldiers’ preparation. By enlisting the assistance of a Dari instructor from DLI, I was able to increase dramatically the Brigade’s preparedness to deploy and interact with Afghan nationals.

Celebrating Black History Month: getting to know Zambia & Mazzy!

As we celebrate Black History month, we thought it might be a great idea to get to know Zambia where we have been contemplating to visit our international Rotary projects as well as one of the 7 wonders of the world: the Victoria Falls.

About Mazzy Chirwa:

Zambia also happens to be the country where club President Elitas Mazhyanga Chirwa “Mazzy” was born. Mazzy joined our club in April 2014. She was a Speaker Chair and a Co- Club Services Director before rising to the ranks of club President. Mazzy is a naturalized US Citizen. She has a 30-year-old daughter (an only child) who lives in Las Vegas, NV. Mazzy came to the US at the invitation of CNN, the Ted Turner owned the TV network. Mazzy had work as a TV Journalist in Africa close to 10 years before migrating to the US.

Mazzy has a master’s degree in Marriage, Child and Family Mental Health Therapy/Counseling. In her practice, she has worked with LGBTQ clients with a focus on trans-gender clients. She has also worked with juvenile sex offenders, substance abuse clients, and in relational therapy; she has worked with cis gender (straight), gay, polygamous, and polyamorous couples.  She has a TV show that she plans to get back to after June… when she is no longer club President.

Fair Oaks Foundation for Leisure and the Arts (FOFLA)

FOFLA is an organization that works to enhance and expand the quality of life in the community by supporting measures that broadly relate to leisure activities and the arts. They work closely with nonprofit groups, local park districts and other support leisure and arts activities. They are hoping to bring thier ideas to the community once the new facilities are completed in the village.

About Larry Schluer:

My last name is Schluer, pronounced Sch-lu-er. Born and raised in Sacramento, joined the Sacramento Fire Dept in 1972-retired 2002. Fourth generation firefighter and on Board of Directors of Pioneer Mutual Hook and Ladder Society…the 501 C3 and an all volunteer group of retired firefighters, that operates the Sacramento Regional Fire Museum. About Michele: Michele Zumwalt lives in Folsom, California where she and her husband, John, raised two daughters, Sarah and Katie Zumwalt. They are active in the recovery community and Michele’s the author of Amazon’s #1 Hot New Release book, “Ruby Shoes: Surviving Prescription Drug Addiction.” Michele has served as a Law Enforcement Chaplain in Sacramento County where she’s done far too many overdose death notifications. Days for Girls

Menstural heath management is a human right. Days for Girls is an international organization geared to making reusable pads for girls. However, it is not just about the kits; they also provide education on body changes, self defense and human trafficing. Karen is a team leader of a local chapter. She will be sharing about the organization, local contributions and the work being done to try and meeting the needs of 500 million girls so they can protect themselves and remain in school. These pad are distributed around the world, including major US cities.

Innerwheel spaghetti feed fundraiser

Jerrod Sieberg from DMV will talk on driving issues as we age. He will bring plenty of fliers and information on programs the DMV has to help aging drivers.

 At the meeting Inner wheel will be doing a wine raffle as they have done in the past. They have 12 $20 value bottles of wine all wrapped up and in one bag with a bottle of wine is a $50 Amazon Gift Card. They will be selling tickets during the social hour starting at 6, and then again right before the raffle closes near the last part of the meeting.  They will announce the winners who will come up to the table and pick their bottle of wine, and the lucky person will win the $50 gift card!!!

Norcal Golden Retriever Rescue/Norcal Golden Lovers Sac - Rescue organization and training of support dogs

The speaker will be Robin Gostovich, Director of Outreach for NorCal Golden Retriever Rescue, and Founder and Director of NorCal Golden Lovers Sac.  She will describe the work she does for the Rescue, and the passion she has for NorCal Golden Lovers Sac. While the Rescue works to save Golden Retrievers that have been abandoned or relinquished by owners who don’t want them anymore, NorCal Golden Lovers Sac is a network of Golden owners who share enthusiasm for their dogs, for creating friendships, and helping the community by collecting items of need for unhoused children and veterans.
