Here's the official answer from Rotary International:
     
     Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional and community leaders which:
  • provides humanitarian service
  • encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and
  • helps build goodwill and peace in the world.
     Rotary is non-political and non-religious, and open to all cultures, races and creeds.  It is the oldest service organization in the world.  There are over 34,000 Rotary clubs in over 150 countries.  Rotary's motto is Service Above Self. 
 
Here's what we at the Rotary Club of Fair Oaks say: 
 
   Being a Rotarian means:
  • joining a family you meet with weekly,
  • doing good both in Fair Oaks and around the world, and
  • having fun while doing it.
     Our club was founded in 1946, and we are one of 41 clubs in Rotary District 5180, which stretches from Oroville to Walnut Grove, and from West Sacramento to El Dorado Hills.  We have been named the District's Best Club in our size category for the last two years.
